Elements Combined

Sentence writing.  Now why on earth did I never really think about this as being an important part of Kindergarten?  Or school in general, for that matter.  And not only did I not think of it as being something that would be learned this year, I did not think of all of the little pieces that go into it.

Just like we, as parents, marvel at the way we get to see how mobility, speech and self-feeding get broken into each detailed component as our extra-special children learn them, we also need to relish the itty bitty, yet still huge, parts of writing.  Fine motor, sure, but then you've got comprehension and the conscious decision to actually write something meaningful (well, meaningful to a 5 year old certainly leaves a bit to be desired), and spelling.  Sammi's butterfly was her version of the teacher's, seen above it, and the words below were written as the teacher said them carefully, enunciating the letters but not actually saying what the letters should be.

A butterfly for my sweet butterfly...

I drl (draw) a prte (pretty) butrfli (butterfly).

The sentences below were copied off the board.

The cat got the bird.
The girl sits in the tree.

My 5 year old is working on those same skills. Being able to look at the board and copy is a difficult skill. I taught kids in 4th grade who had trouble with it. You have to be able to remember what you saw on the board, find your place on the paper, and then look back up to find where you were on the board. Sammi is doing great!

last year (kindy) one of the goals was that Elias could copy from board. really i think it was crazy because Elias couldnt even copy from the line above in his notebook.
now 6 months later he is doing much better, but still is crazy how much kids here in mexico copy from board. really, i cant believe education hasnt changed yet. sigh.

I remember teaching 1st and 2nd graders that could not do that yet. Sammi did such a great job! :)

I'm an 100% positive I was not writing sentences in kindergarten. I think I was playing, napping and listening to storytime! It is so amazing what 5-6 year olds can do when you teach them.

That's SO awesome! Congrats to Sammi!

Also funny that your watermark makes it look like the school uses "batesmotel" branded lined paper. :)
