A Brief Glimpse of Her Day

Not a great shot, since I used my cell phone...  But I just love seeing these little glimpses into Samantha's school life.  This was just after we dropped her off yesterday, while we took a few minutes to talk to her teacher.  When we first started sending her to this school (this is the private Junior K program she attends 2 days a week), it took her ages to settle in and get comfortable.  She cried for the first two or three weeks she went, making us wonder if we'd made a mistake.  I knew she had some issues with transitioning to new environments, but I had no idea it would be that rough.  She would even cry right at pickup time in the afternoon, knowing that daddy would be there to rescue her soon, just about breaking our hearts.  It's so exciting to see how she's changed now.  Not only does she get excited to go to school, but she talks about her teachers incessantly (Hi, Miss Katie!), and barely gives a wave goodbye when she's dropped off in the morning, happier to go and explore and play.  Granted, we can't be at school with her to see exactly what she does and how every day, but the school is set up as a long corridor, with classrooms on either side, and long windows along the length of each room, perfect for spying.  When Steve picks her up every day, he carefully peeks into the window, trying to pick her out in the group without being spotted.  By anyone.  One child sees him, and the alarm goes out like wildfire:  "Samantha!!  Your daddy's here!"

I still worry about her Kindergarten readiness, although others don't seem to.  I do also have to remember that there's still another 7 months yet until then, another 7 months to grow and mature, to learn and discover.  While just a drop in the pan for us old folks, 7 months is nothing to scoff at in the life of a young child - anything is possible!  I wonder what valuable lesson she will teach me next...

Wow, she looks like she is doing great and her adjustment with the crying and all sounds somewhat typical even, it sounds like she has adjusted well. Bring on Kindergarten!

She'll do fine in Kindergarten! She and Lilly are so similar but Samantha seems to have just a couple more skills (hey, she can put arms and legs on her stick figures! Lilly's just doing the faces still!), and based on what Lilly can do, the schools we're looking at said she'd be fine in Kindergarten (even though at this point we're probably holding her back - but at our request, not that school's). But anyways, oh my goodness Sammi is so adorable painting!

I know how you are feeling well kinda...we have been lucky that we live in MD and Ethan actually qualified for an extended IFSP but that money is now gone and we have to send him to preschool in the fall. I am so scared of this and also in my heart I know this will be good for him. He will be 4 in November and I can't keep him a baby forever! So here we are looking at different schools depending on his needs and hoping we make the right decision for our little guy! So here we begin the IEP process but so lucky we have a great team that has been with Ethan since he has been 2 weeks old so I feel like I am in and Ethan too is in good hands. Though we live in different states if you have any suggestions on IEP and meetings I am all ears!!

I think Samantha will be great in Kindegarten just look at her standing there painting!!! A beauty!!

You know, Emma is the same age and I have the exact same worries about her. I look forward to when Eslea can start school. We are blessed to live in a time when our kiddos CAN attend school. We know their potential and I'm so glad we get to show others.
That picture is adorable, camera phone or not!

Beautiful picture of her just creating... JM loves to paint, too, but I don't think he gets enough opportunity to do it. LOVE your blog look (it's been way too long -- I've been slacking w/ Luke being so busy). 7 months, as you know, if a *very* long time in terms of kids' development. If the teachers believe she's ready for K, she'll be even more ready when the time comes. :-)
